Probably wouldn't be bad. But they tend to be more expensive then goldfish. If you are going to be displaying the fish portion of your setup it will be cool, a lot of people just have a tote full of fish. Also remember that cichlids are not community fish, they need to be by themselves in a species specific tank. And even then they don't always even get along with each other.

      Thanks ,I all already knew that they are unfriendly to one another so what i probably do is to take in 4 fish at a time so that they don't pick on one as a weakling.

Cichlids kill each other, not good in groups for long

      most cichlids are schooling’s fish and prefer groups. Cichlids are also one of the best fish for aquaponcis tilapia being a great example.

      Probably true,they (sometimes)group up if bought at a young age ,on my knowledge

      now that I think about it my experience has specifically been with African cichlids, it would be understandable if their behavior differs from species to species

Tilapia is a cichlid and great for aquatics as they can handle the lower water temps then most cichlids. Gold fish are rather useless in aquaponics. They can be hard to breed and few want to eat them. Catfish and Tilapia would be my ideal choice. We have catfish and blue gill in our very large greenhouse reservoir.
