I’m looking to move home and will be searching for a property that has space for a hydroponic /Aquaponics set up. The goal is to be as self-sufficient as possible with salad, veg, greens etc. We are a family of 4 and uk based (south).

My question......How much space should I be looking for?
What size greenhouse is needed to comfortably provide for 4 people?

I guess bigger the better but what’s a good size to start. I’ll be looking to maximise the use (vertical plus beds etc) As different plants like different conditions....

Should I plan to have two or even three separate systems in order to grow a wider range?
Or is that not worth the effort in terms of results compared to putting everything on one big loop?

Thanks in advance.

Check out juice+ towers. Mine is sooo self sufficient. Or google atlantic beach urban farms, atlantic beach, florida and you will find the link to the system.

You don't need too big a space. My greenhouse is 14 x14ft and I have over 100 plants and probably room for another hundred. They are all leafy greens mind. I eventually plan to double the size and add sweet pepper, courgette, cucumber etc.

Mine is 12x24. I grow tomatoes pepper cucumbers zucchini cauliflower broccoli cabbage lettuce spinach and a few herbs. I use Dutch buckets for the bigger plants, floating rafts for the lettuce. I tried recirculating vertical towers last year and they were ok for small greens and herbs but I pulled them out this year. I use every inch of space and grow for the two of us with lots of benefits for friends and family. I’ve also canned quite a bit so there may be more gifting this year.

With more space I’d grow melons and winter squash. I still buy root veggies. So figure out what you eat and that determines the size. Ventilation is a Greenhouse’s biggest headache. The temp swings can be huge. If the air doesn’t move you will have problems. Open windows invite bugs. I’m fortunate that it doesn’t get below freezing very often or very long.

All the water inside plus water/soda bottles under the beds are a nice heat sink. I don’t grow in the summer. Its 15°F hotter in the greenhouse in summer even with a 60% shade cloth. Nothing will set fruit! Cooling is too expensive. Address these issues before you build and you will enjoy your greenhouse. Best wishes!
