How large should the net cups be to hold plants

I’m currently in the planning process of setting up a new model system for the house. Currently still freezing here, so just prepping at the moment.

My old model utilized 4x4 trays and a reservoir. I’m wanting to use 4” PVC anchored to a fence this time around as I believe I can expand the amount of food acquired and reduce space required. My question is thrice fold.

First, what types of plants do well in these types of setups (I was hoping for a mix of peppers, tomatoes and lettuce) and second, how large should the net cups be to hold these plants?

And finally is 4” even necessary, can it be 3”?

Inside or outside? Smaller plants can go in the pvc pipe, generally the larger plants (tomatoes and peppers) are grown in more like dutch buckets. I have heard you can do the bigger plants in the tubes if you keep the nutrient film very shallow.

I have not been able to get an outside set up yet. There is a good video on YouTube by MHPgardener about an outside raft set up he made and problems he encountered. I have been trying to set up a covered area to do something outside, and facing obstacles.

My peppers are doing well in 4" tubes. Lettuce and herbs, I found most other things too big. I do prune my peppers to keep the height down.....

is your set up outside? If so, are you noticing any problems?

Yes outside, what kind of problems ? Nothing really, I am still trying to learn the nutrients......
