How long do these plants live? Do you ever trim the roots?
I ask because I've got 3 pepper plants in a ~8gal tote and the roots are 2-3 inches deep in the bottom of the tote at this point. They are about 8months old and would have easily filled a 4in PVC tube I think.

I run my system from April 1 (hopefully after the last freeze) to the end of July due to Big Beef stops setting fruit when the night temperatures get above 75....the roots are not an issue.... with a true NFT system it has sloping pipes and the nutrients are cycled on and off which allows for air pruning of the roots...the seedlings are bare rooted or in cubes, not net cup and no media... the roots lay on the bottom of the pipe... it is very easy to take down and reset....picture is of the roots in the pipe about a week before shutting down the system. I start my Big Beef seedling in January Hide or report this.

Can any body let me know what are the other mediums for germination

I've seen a 5 gallon bucket that the tomato roots filled up.
