So I just fired this 3D printed tower up for the first time. Pump is a bit too powerful, so a good reason to print more modules.

My question is how long to run the pump and what kind of lights would work well with this setup? Also when do I add nutrients?

I heard to wait till mature leaves are there. TIA

Scott, First Kudo's on your awesome 3D Print! Very nice!

Second, easy stuff to fix/control water flow - add a simple flow valve. I use the ball valves in the irrigation section of Home Depot.

Third, I've been doing hydro for a bunch of years, micro, macro's, Passive, Active..nft/towers..Loads of fun. I've run experiments on your question about the when part of nutrients, and arrived at this conclusion:

I tray start all of my seeds. I run half strength nutrient for first 5 to 7 days, then go full strength. I have found that most leafy's do much better than a tray that has plain water.

Down the road by a couple of weeks the plain water started tray that is now running full nutrient does start to catch up to the tray that started with half strength for first few days then to full after that. Some of this also depends on what you're growing as well.

On every few minutes or all the time. Get a easy mixable nutrient for the first time.

I was going to use some 4” pipe and cut the cup holes but this looks like a much less aggravation

    • Tonix Rm

      Yep, much easier.

It's not my design, so I can't sell without permission. But thats always an option as well

It looks awesome.. Do you mind to share the stl file? Any leakage? Thanks

      what about pieces already printed?

    • Andrew Taylor

I asked the designer for permission

    • Andrew Taylor

are you interested? I got permission

This is an FDM style printer? Did you print as solid or high density? I am surprised you aren't having issues with it absorbing the water. I am an engineer for a food processing machinery company and we have to coat our 3D printed parts in a food grade epoxy because they just absorb every bit of water that touches them.

ive never had an issue with it absorbing water but I could see how eventual mold growth could get between the layer lines. I may have to coat in the future.

how did you make this design? Please, this is what i am looking for

So anyone interested in purchasing one of these pm me. I got permission to sell these with a percentage going to the designer. It will take a while to print and there is a ton of customization. I don't have an amount right now but all in all it will probably be under $200

      $200 per standing Unit?

    • Andrew Taylor

yeah. Minus the bottom pot (Ikea $10) and the pump and tubing.

    • Andrew Taylor

But like I said if you're interested I need to do the math that's just a guess

Cheaper to get a printer and print yourself or hiring someone to print for you?
Do you also need special filament to print so it won’t leach into the nutrients?

Pla filament is biodegradable, corn based. So shouldn't have a negative affect

Be sure to seal the entire thing with a long-lasting, food-safe sealant. 3D printed plastics are extremely porous and are a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria.
