Growing various lettuce in Masterblend, using air stones . The leaves of lettuce feel 'gritty' and taste is off a bit, almost a chemical taste. Are we supposed to remove nutrients and use just water for a bit before harvesting?

No you are using too much. I use very little for lettuce. 1400 ec and 6.5-7.0 ph

      I will reduce the nutes...

      do you mean Ppm 1400

    • John Di Cesare

      Not ec

    • John Di Cesare

      Which would be 2.8ec

    • Brian Tetreault

no I mean EC. have you run 2.8 ec? That is really high and can easily cause nutrient burn or lockout.

i don't have a pen im getting on ive only measured ph and ppm...

    • John Di Cesare

I run my lettuce kale etc at 400-500ppm

    • Brian Tetreault

Ppm is half so yes 400 500 is good on low side. 900 1000 ppm is high

Shouldn't you always flush anything being consumed before harvest?

how do they do that in the field? I don't even harvest but constantly graze whilst still growing.

    • David Young

hmm. I just thought that was proper so you have better tastes

    • Brian Tetreault

The plant doesnt put minerals persay. It makes it own and stores them in the leafs

Heck I do leaf crops at only 500-600 ppm with masterblend though that is with rain water starting at almost zero.

PH means everything with lettuce, get it right and you can adjust ph depending on taste.
